Group 45

Day 1, 2, & 3:
Yay! Psych Fair has begun! These next weeks will fly by!  Our group will be doing the "What's in the box?" experiment. We will have participants stick their hands in four boxes that hold different object to test how fear and trust are related. Throughout these past three days, our group has completed Student Handouts 11,12,13,14,&15. These handouts highlighted the main factors of our experiment such as:
- 11- This had our group divide the many tasks that will come our way when preparing the experiment. For a majority of the project, we will work together to make it awesome!
- 12- This had our group figure out what we know about our experiment. We know that we will test fear and trust. The audience will know that whatever is in the box will not hurt them. We can't wait to see the reactions of people during the day of the fair! We just need to know why people will react in certain ways.
- 13- This highlights of studies done that relate to ours. We have three studies that focus on trust. One big focus of trust in our experiment is the ability to trust strangers with unknown factors in the box. Studies we referred to are, The Blind Trust Experiment and two of the Zero Trust Studies. They highlight trust with strangers, trust when in public vs. private and trust with those who know you.
- 14- Our topic for the experiment is trust. A relationship it focuses on is trust and fear. We want to know if the lack of trust in a stranger intensifies fear. Our thesis is: The lack of trust in strangers causes increased levels of fear.
- 15- This handout questions our variables in the experiment. The independent variable is the level of trust that the participant has in the stranger (the experimenter). Our dependent variable is the level of fear (measured by the heart rate). The constant variable will be the contents of the box and the amount of time passed after the final heart rate measure. A confounding principle we could run into is if a participant has a heart condition that messes with their heart rate. As of right now, we are not using a control group. We are comparing the difference of the heart rates before and after of each person to all of the other people. We are still in question on if we should include one as of right now.

Day 4 & 5
Today we completed student handouts 16 and 17! 16 had us go over all of the details of our experiment ( I.E. factors that could affect it, timing, participants, and steps to complete the experiment). 17 was a google form that was sent to our teacher. This had us put in our hypothesis and also made us go through a checklist to make sure we have everything in place to be able to complete our experiment.

Day 6
Today we finished our rough draft. It focused on previous information all put together. We also worked on student handouts 19 and 20. Within the handouts, we finalized our project and how we will perform our experiment. Take the heart rate of the participant. This is will the control group for the experiment. As someone takes the heart rate, another person is filling out the google form. We will also ask if they trust us. Once the first heart rate is taken and recorded, the participant will be blindfolded and guided to go through the boxes. They will be told and guided to the hole in the box. Participants will then place their hand in the box and will describe what they think they felt. Their description, as well as their reaction, will be recorded. Once they have gone through the four boxes, all reactions and descriptions will be recorded and their blindfold will be removed. Then the participant will have their heart rate taken again after they have completed the experiment. We will also ask if they would trust us again after doing the experiment. We are still finalizing what we are going to put in the boxes. Our ideas are cooked noodles, slime, feather duster, and a hand. Other suggestions were peeled grapes and popcorn kernels. Tomorrow we will bring in a poster board and work on that. Only twelve days until the big day!

Day 7
Today we put the heart rate app through some trials. We found that with some people, the app has a hard time finding a heart rate. We are going to find some other apps and try them. We also went over the design of our poster board. Once we put that together, we will upload a picture. We are trying to find boxes that we can spray paint that will hold our objects. We have finalized some of the objects in the boxes. Once we have them all figured out, we will update you.

Day 8
It is set up day! We went to Sandburg to set up our project. We had two tables so we drapped to tablecloths across them. For the gap in the middle of the tables (where the hand of a person would be in box three) we layered tablecloths so you woldn't be able to see the person underneath there. This is the poster board that sat at the end of our table along with candy to entise people to come and try it out! On the poster we had the hypothesis, our reseach summary and sources, the procedure and another thing we are testing: Are boys more afriad than girls?
We then included some funny pictures and caution signs to caputure peoples attetnion.

  1. Sounds very interesting. Could you tell us more about how the experiment works?
