Color Condition Correlation - Kusper, Venuso
Hey Blog,
Today we determined what we wanted to do for the project. We have decided to test the effects of color on emotion. Is mere exposure to color enough to change the way a person feels? We would like to find out. Our experiment will expose participants to color for a period of time and then evaluate the change in emotion, if there is any change. We are excited to start work on this project. We will be attempting to prove the hypothesis: Mere exposure to color is enough to effect the emotions of those exposed to the color.
Hey Blog,
Today we determined what we would need to do for our experiment. Since there are only two of us, it seemed fair to try to distribute the workload evenly. We believe that it may be difficult to truly even out the workload, but with enough communication it's possible. We both want to produce the best project possible, so we are reviewing one another's work before turning things in. It is kind of stressful to do the same workload as a four person group with half as many people, but we are confident and determined in the success of this experiment.
Hey Blog,
Today we worked on the design of our project. We wanted to figure out exactly what we need to do to make this experiment happen. We decided that we would use colored light and attempt to block out outside colors. We think we will be using a box to do this. We have come up with a shopping list and a kind of design. Now that we know what we are doing officially in terms of set up and building, we are more readily capable of explaining and researching for our project.
Hey Blog,
Today we did some research on our topic, determining what similar experiments have been performed. While many psychologists have attempted to discover this connection between feeling and color, we could not find any published reports matching our exact project. However, we found several reports of experiments testing the effect of specific colors on things such as accuracy of activity or aggression. For example, one study determined red ink deters adults from success on a test. Another study showed that sports teams in black jerseys tend to be more aggressive. We hope these trends reign true in our experiment.
Hey Blog,
Today we began our rough draft. We understand the significant amount of research and understanding necessary to write such a complex report. Once again, we find that working with two people alone is slightly overwhelming, but we are confident we will be successful.
Hey Blog,
Today we finalized the materials necessary for the project and we made plans to meet up over Thanksgiving break. We decided we will use a box, cut a hole through the side and shine a lamp into the box. We will then ask participants to evaluate their mood upon experiencing each color. We also created a Google Form for participants to record their emotions before the experiment and after exposure to each color.
Hey Blog,
Today we made a poster using of words one could use to describe their emotions. We did this to ensure participants could accurately record their emotion without any error in terms of forgetting a word or not finding the right word to express the strength of their emotion. We had several words, each with different connotations in terms of strength and type of emotion. While we did not include every emotion, we are confident we provided a good list to start with.
Hey Blog,
Today we created our large poster. Out of everything we have done for the experiment, this task seemed the most simple. We had already been forced to determine the information on the person in order to continue with the planning of our experiment. We finished the posters and finished the set up for the experiment over the weekend. We spray painted our box to ensure the undertones of the color of the box would not interfere with the participants' perception of the color to which they are exposed. We are super excited for the fair to start.
Hey Blog,
As lame as it may sound, today we just talked. We talked through our experiment, who would do what job, potential issues with our experiment and how we could prevent them. We wanted to make sure we were entirely on the same page in terms of this experiment and after today, we are. We finalized some things for our posters and design and we are confident for the best at the fair.
Hey Blog,
Today was the parent night. Because of the snow day, I am sure some people were unable to go due to existing plans. Nevertheless we had a successful night. We determined that fifteen seconds of light exposure made the experiment overly long and decided to shorten it to ten seconds of light exposure for tomorrow. In addition, we found that being upstairs may have limited foot traffic in our area, and therefor the pool of potential participants. Nevertheless, we had a lot of interest in our experiment, joking with parents they can use their responses to help with their decorating.
Hey Blog,
Today was the Psych Fair! We had so much fun performing our experiment and doing others. We learned a lot about psychology just through the limited experiences we had between periods. We had over seventy participants, which is over the fifty we wanted. We were super excited, and it seemed that a lot of people enjoyed our experiment. Although we haven't looked much over our data, we do see a lot of variance in our data and a lot of change in answers between exposure to the colors. We are super excited to analyze this data and put together a thorough report of our experiment. This whole process was a tad stressful, but it was a super fun process during which we learned a lot. We are super happy to have taken this class this year and had this experience.
