When we reviewed our data from yesterday, we found that most people saw the hollow side of the mask as being more convex when the light was shining on the mask's chin, which was the opposite of what we expected. We think that this result might have happened because more of the mask was illuminated when the light was on the chin which made the illusion more powerful for observers.

We had 94 participants yesterday. Even though the fair was an hour and a half shorter than it was originally planned to be, it was a long day; however, we really enjoyed seeing participants' reactions to the project. While some people did not see the mask as being convex at all, many people were quite entertained and even a little alarmed. We were surprised that the battery in the rotating stand lasted all day.

The fair is going well! It took a few attempts to set up our project. We thought that it would work in the light, but we ended up needing a dark room. Most of the participants are really amused and have positive feedback about the project.

11-27-18
We had a snow day yesterday, so the fair has been rescheduled for tomorrow. Today, we finished our poster board. We will set up our full project this evening.

11-20-18
Today, we taped our printouts to the poster board. We are looking forward to the fair, which only one week away!

11-19-18
We printed out the visual displays for our tri-fold board and found folded together some printable optical illusions such as the pictured paper dragon.

11-16-18
Today, we put together our rough draft and worked on our booth displays. This weekend, we will need to get a mask, a stand, and a tri-fold board.

11-15-18
We worked on displays for our booth and found some extra activities to add, such as an inverted paper dragon which follows the same principle as the hollow mask.

We determined the exact steps for our procedure and worked on synthesizing our sources into a description which we will give to our participants. We feel on track with the project.

11-13-18
Today, we decided to do the hollow face demonstration and established our hypothesis and variables. We found some specific studies about this illusion. One study discusses the use of the hollow face in diagnosing schizophrenia, and another observes that infants do not respond to this illusion as much as adults do. Our group also talked about the materials which we need to obtain before the fair, such as a mask, card stock, and a light.

Our project will be about paranormal psychology, so we are looking for a demonstration which exhibits that the brain creates its own answers for stimuli that it cannot explain. One idea is the hollow face illusion, in which a convex mask looks concave because the brain expects faces to be concave. Another idea is the moving-eye illusion, in which a woman in a picture appears to be looking to the right when the image is far away from the observer but appears to be looking to the left when the image is closer. We have not found any studies which are specific to these particular cases, but we came across some interesting research about optical illusions in general that would be applicable to our project. We are also determining what our hypothesis and variables are.
