GROUP 16

PSYCHOLOGY FAIR

Today, Group 16 worked to determine and finalize an idea for our experiment at the Psychology Fair. While we originally planned to focus on "logic," we soon discovered that the experiments we brainstormed were neither efficient nor feasible. Switching our topic to "automaticity," we decided to test the Stroop Effect, a simple and clever way in which to demonstrate that once acquired through extensive practice, mental skills such as reading are automatic.
We next began to work on Student Handouts 11-15, in which we researched background information regarding automaticity, determined a hypothesis, and identified the variables in our experiment.

First, we finished and submitted the Student Handouts 11-15 that we began yesterday. The Stoop Effect tests the theory of automaticity, which proposes that automatic reading doesn't require focused attention. Instead, the brain simply engages in it automatically. Recognizing colors may be less of an automated process. While the brain registers written meaning automatically, it does require a certain amount of attentional resources to process color, making it more difficult to process color information and therefore slowing down reaction times. Our hypothesis states that if people are asked to name written colors that are typed in opposing font colors, then they will take longer than they do to name written colors that are typed in correlating font colors because of the theory of automaticity.
Group 16 then began to work on Student Handouts 16-17. We first established the procedure for our experiment, and then reviewed a project data checklist.

Today, Group 16 finished Student Handouts 16-17. We then began to work on Student Handout 18 and develop our rough draft.
Ella created packets for each group member consisting of:
(a) 20 written colors in correlating font colors (test group)
(b) 20 written colors in different font colors (experimental group)
(c) multiple sheets with a table to record data
In addition, Ella began to create the poster.
