Nov 12, 2018: Day 5
Over the weekend, we read student handout 1- 10. Today we began research and assigning roles for our experiment. We completed student handout 11, 12, 14, and 15 in class and identified our roles, set up for the psych fair, and three sources. The experiment that our group chose involves using identical candles with the same scent and dyeing each one a different color. With this experiment, we will be testing the relationship between visual and olfactory systems, as participants are expected to smell a scent that corresponds with the color of the candle rather than the actual scent of it.
Nov 13, 2018: Day 6
Today we worked on Student Handout 13, which allowed us to analyze the three studies we chose as references. In SH 13, we cited our sources in APA format, identified the question, participants, and findings of our sources, and began our introduction paragraph for our rough draft. The sources that we chose for reference are:

Nov 14, 2018: Day 7
Today we did not have class because it was a late start Wednesday. We did not have anything to work on outside of class because we are all caught up.
Nov 15, 2018: Day 8
Today we were very productive and worked on Student Handout 16, 17, and 18. Student Handout 16 involved us establishing our research activity procedure by coming up with a method for surveying our participants and finding ways to make sure that outside factors don't influence our results. We decided on our procedure which will be: Each participant will smell the first candle and record the perceived scent silently. Then they will smell the coffee beans to clear their nasal passage and prepare for the next scent. The participant will then smell the second candle and record the perceived scent silently. In Student Handout 17, we finalized our hypothesis and filled out a checklist to confirm that we were on track. Our hypothesis is: If the candles are perceived as different, even if they are not, then subjects will perceive their scents as what stereotypically corresponds with what color the candle is because of parapsychology, the past experiences of the subjects such as associating different colors with certain smells. We started Student Handout 18 which is the rough draft, but we did not complete it.
Nov 16, 2018: Day 9
Today we finished Student Handout 18, which was our rough draft. Our rough draft is very long at this point and very detailed. We also completed our Google Form and Student Handout 19 and 20. Student Handouts 19 and 20 involved creating a list of materials and a student work request. We did not need any special materials from Mr. Geiger in SH 19. For SH 20, we identified that we will need a trifold poster, two white vanilla scented candles, food coloring, and coffee beans. As a group, we will go shopping for the materials and split the cost. Since we were so productive today, we do not have any work to complete over the weekend.
Nov 19, 2018: Day 10
Today we were supposed to work on Student Handouts 19and 20, but we already completed those last week so we did not have to work on them today. We discussed Student Handouts 21 and 22 as a group. In SH 21, we discussed the setup of our trifold poster. We will buy the posterboard tonight so that we can work on sketching out the design of the poster tomorrow in class, but we have decided to get together on Sunday to finish the posterboard and dye the candles. In SH 22, we designed the background of our poster. We want our poster to be rainbow and colorful because the title of our project is "Colorful Conundrum: What You See is What You Smell." We also began discussing Student Handout 26 which involved planning the visual handout that we will hand out to participants.
Nov 20, 2018: Day 11
Today we planned out our tri-fold poster. We did not get a chance to buy the poster last night so we will buy it before we get together on Sunday to work on it. We finished Student Handout 26 which was our visual handout for the psych fair. The handout includes the research question we are testing, background information, and a fun quiz on scent.
Nov 26, 2018: Day 12
Today was supposed to be the day of the Parent Night Psych Fair, but we had a snow day so the schedule for the day was shifted by a day. On Sunday, my group got together at my house to work on our tri-fold poster and dye the candles for our experiment. Kate bought the tri-fold poster and we decorated it with many colors and glitter. We included our hypothesis, research question, background information, and a short quiz on scent on our poster. We also included several colorful pictures to make our poster more visually appealing. While we were decorating the poster, we melted down fresh linen scented wax melts so that we could dye them. At first, we tried to dye the orange candle with food coloring, but that ended up failing because the water-based food coloring would not mix with the oil-based candle. After a little bit of internet research, we decided to dye the candles with crayons which I already had in my house. We dyed the candles and poured them into candle holders that Kate brought. After the candles cooled, we added a piece of yarn to each candle to mimic a wick and make them look as real as possible. Once the candles and tri-fold poster were completed, we were all finished with everything we needed to prepare and we were ready to go whenever the pysch fair occurred. We received the notice that the pysch fair would be shifted a day early Monday afternoon and we were not majorly affected by the change since we were all prepared and our experiment was relatively simple.
Nov 27: Day 13
Today we spoke about the pysch fair procedures during class to prepare for the parent night tonight at 6:00pm. Because of the last minute change in date for the Parent Night Pysch Fair, Ameena and Amna could not make it because they had work, but Kate and I were fine by ourselves because our experiment was not difficult to set up or present. We arrived at the fair at around 5:45pm because there was not much set up involved in our experiment. I brought the tri-fold poster, candles, and coffee grounds since they were still at my house from our workday at my house and Kate brought her Chromebook for our Google Forms survey. Our table was located upstairs near one of the back corners. We placed the tablecloth on our table, put our poster on the left corner of our table, set out the candles with the coffee grounds in the middle, and set out Kate's Chromebook for the participants to use. The fair began at 6:00pm and there was a steady flow of parents throughout the hour. Both mine and Kate's parents came to participate in our experiment. We had about 30 participants throughout the night. A few of the parents recognized that the candles were the same, but most of the results revealed that the orange candle appeared to be pumpkin spice scented and the blue candle was vanilla scented, which supported our hypothesis since both of those scents are often associated with their corresponding scents. Once we finished, we left our supplies at the fair overnight for the next day and decided that I would buy some candy to give out to participants tomorrow at the daytime fair. Here's a picture of the candles that we made on Sunday:
Nov 28: Day 14
After weeks of preparation, today was finally the pysch fair. Since the timeline was shifted by one day, the fair now falls on a late start Wednesday and the class periods are about 10 minutes shorter. Because of this change, we expect that we will have fewer participants. Additionally, our location is upstairs in a far off corner which was slightly isolated. This also could have caused us to have fewer participants. Since we had already set up the night before, my group and I arrived at school around 9:25am. I brought the candy and we put it in a bowl to pass out to participants, which we hoped would increase participation, but I didn't see any evidence of this. Here is a photo of our setup:

Here is picture of our procedure, which was described in an earlier blog post:

Throughout the day, we had a scattered flow of participants and received a total of 139 responses on our Google Form. The results are as follows:

Our experiment seemed to adhere to our hypothesis which was: If the candles are perceived as different colors , even if they are not, then subjects will perceive their scents as what stereotypically corresponds with what color the candle is because of parapsychology, the past experiences of the subjects such as associating different colors with certain smells. The participants overwhelmingly identified the orange candle as pumpkin spice, a scent typically associated with the color orange. The participants also mostly identified the blue candle as vanilla or blueberry pie scented, two scents commonly associated with the color blue. Overall, the psych fair was a success; we received lots of data that supported our hypothesis and displayed our research to several students and parents. All we have left to do now is write our final paper and we'll be done with the pysch fair!!!!
