Group 47
Group 47
Days 1-2
-Decided our topic will subliminal perception.
-Worked on student handouts (SHs) 11 through 15, which describes our division of work, research questions, background research, our hypothesis, and variables respectively in organized worksheets. SHs 11-15
-Developed a plan for our experiment: Create a skit and video tape it two different times, the first time is for the controlled group, the second time is for everyone else. The second time will include subliminal messages. After groups have watched the videos, we will record whether or not the video had influenced the groups to select a particular beverage or not compared to the controlled group.
Day 3
-Worked on SH 13 and 14. SHs 11-15
-Completed handout 13 which is background information, meaning an annotated bibliography.
-Our experiment will test how many people are influenced to select a certain beverage after being exposed to subliminal messaging compared to a control group, which is similar to the experiments we researched.
Day 4
- Assigned SHs 16-17. SH 16 & 17
- Started forming the rough draft. This includes our hypothesis, background research, citations, etc.
- Decided on what materials we will need. This includes a poster, construction paper, our Chromebooks, and a table. Everything else will be online.
- We decided we expect to have 300-400 results.
Day 5
- Changed from a video skit to a slideshow
- Finished 16-19. SH 16 & 17, SH 18-20
- Wrote rough draft for our experiment. This includes our hypothesis, background research, citations, etc from above.
- We have decided to view our results through a google form given to our participants through links or QR scanners. We plan on having them use their own phones.
- It will take approximately 2-3 minutes per person for them to look at/hear about the slide show in addition to taking our survey.
- Multiple people can listen/watch and take the survey at one time.
Day 6
- None of us were in class on this day
- Brought tri-fold poster to school
Day 7
- Watched YouTube videos to find examples
- Googled other examples of subliminal perception
- Make google slide show for participants to view : Ad Slide Show
- Made google form for participants to answer while watching slide show : Google Slide
- Printed out examples, descriptions, steps/procedure, and other information
Day 8
- Put together poster: glue facts, info, and pictures of ads to it
- Set up poster and table in our curriculum fair room
- Our booth was on the upper floor, where it was hotter and slightly more crowded
- Practiced experiment with parents
- Changed QR scanner to ensure all participants can view the survey without having to sign in google
Day 9
- Presenting day/Psych Fair is today
- We surveyed 317 people... here is a link to the responses : Results
- Whether during or after the explanation of our slideshow and poster board, participants were asked to take a survey on what they recall from advertisements or know about specific advertisements
- Originally we had planned to have our Psych Fair on Tuesday the 27th, but there was a snow day on Monday the 26th, so we pushed it back one day. So, the Psych Fair took place on Wednesday the 28th.
- At our high school, Wednesdays are "late start", which means instead of school starting at 8:00 am, it starts at 9:30 am.
- Because of this change in school schedule, we had to reduce our expected number of responses to a much lower, number because we had less time to present. Our goal was 200-300 people.
- There were 7 class periods yesterday, so we alternated having the participants take the survey before or after the slide show by class period, and during the last class period of the day we randomly told them to select during or after.
- We expected to ask roughly 30-40 people per class period to reach our goal, which we reached
- Participants during the school day ranged from freshmen to seniors in high school throughout all periods of the day, both male and female
- Some cell phones did not work with the QR scanner, such as an LG Samsung, but that person could still open the link using their Snapchat or Twitter cameras. However, if they did not have either of those, I would have to offer them my own cell phone in order for them to participate. If we ran out of phones to lend out, they became impatient and did not participate, affecting our numbers. This was a rare occurrence.
Day 10
- Analyze our data assigned on this page : Assignment
- Transform our information from the survey to a google spread sheet : Data Spread Sheet
- Our next assignment is to complete the written report (Written Report). This involves a summary and a display of our data in graphs to help our analysis of the project as a whole
- One great example of our participants being persuaded by subliminal messaging is the Home Alone question. Although not everyone got the question correct, 46.4% of people did. The Home Alone scene does not specifically advertise Pepsi, but viewers recognize this product taking place in the movie, and therefore have received subliminal messaging and advertising through this movie.
- Another great example is the Folgers coffee brand taking place in Christmas movies. 62.1% of the participants got this question correct, meaning they recognized this brand from these Christmas movies.
- In both examples above, some answers were lucky guesses, as with other examples, but this should not be a major factor towards influencing our results.
