Bystanding our emotions-Group 34

Days 1, 2, and 3:

We found out that the project we are doing will be based on the bystander effect. We are really happy to learn more about it! We spent the first day dividing up the tasks for our group and, we have been doing the student handout worksheets for the past two days.

Day 4:

Today we worked on Student Handouts 15 and 16- establishing our research procedure and identifying variables. We have decided that we are going to pretend to be asking our participants a series of question and during the interviews, the interviewer will drop the papers and we will see who out of a group of people will help pick up the papers. According to the bystander effect, if there is one person, they will help because there is no diffusion of responsibility, but if there is a group of people, it is more likely that they won't help because they assume someone else will.

Day 5:

Today we started Student Handouts 18 19 and 20- rough draft, student work request, and materials list.  We requested a divider (so no one will see us dropping the papers), a clipboard (to hold the papers and it will make it easier to drop) and a lot of scratch paper (to drop).

Day 7:

Today all we did in class was discuss the techniques we will use during for our bystander experiment and how we think it will play out because we are done with all of the student handouts.

Day 8:

We did the same thing as day 7!

Day 9:

Today we started our posterboard and discussed our booth activities. We really liked the way our board turned out even though we had to create a decoy board so people don't know what our actual experiment is. We decided we are going to bring in donuts and cookies and have a speaker playing music to attract people to come to our experiment.

Day 10:

Psych Fair!!!  Today was super exciting because we got to put all of our research to the test. At first, we were nervous to drop all the papers but after a while, it became really fun. Many people were shocked to learn that our emotions experiment was just a cover-up and that we meant to drop the papers. A lot of test subjects who didn't help felt bad after we told them the actual experiment, but we assured them that it is normal. According to our data collected, if people are alone in a situation, they are more likely to help a person in need than when they are in a group.
